2016 Trip for Rainbows and Brooks in Argentina
2016 Trip for Rainbows and Brooks in Argentina…….
January 2016 and Laguna Verde Lodge to fish Lago Strobel for rainbows.
This was the fifth time I had taken a group to Argentina to fish the huge rainbows in Lago Strobel (Jurassic Lake) and once again it was superb.
We had all the weather variants and as ever the fishing was stunning. You can’t beat all guests catching their personal best wild rainbows. Best recorded was 19lbs and they truly are magnificent.
A wonderful menu and many, many laughs each evening ( possibly helped by some superb Malbecs’ )and it looks as if the 2017 trip will have many repeat bookings.
Clem Booth, Jon Luke, Garry Carr, Tony Latham and Don Hutton were all from the UK and we met with my long time pal Lou Hegedus from Colorado, now on his 8th trip, and last years guests Steve and Ronelle from Australia made for a great mix of people.
One day I found a rainbow dragged up onto the rocks (possibly by a fox) and measured it at 36 inches – the biggest rainbow I have ever seen.
Luciano Alba continues to improve the lodge and facilities including the track around the lake and is the most charming host.
Heading back to El Calafate for the return leg I linked up with Lou and Luciano to head farther south and explore some spring creeks for browns and brooks. We were guided by Tres Amigos Outfitters and very well looked after. First class in fact and thoroughly recommended.
Trout Fisherman will run a feature on the trip in the September issue and you will be stunned by the beauty of the brookies. I had them up to 5lbs and was delighted. We ended up in the vicinity of Rio Gallegos which has a famous sea trout river running through it. Journey home from there went
without a hitch and using courier services in Buenos Aires has been perfect.
