Alaska, Kodiak Island

I'm not running a trip in 2008 but will plan to be back in 2009 and i will be booking that trip. This is steelhead country and for 11 years I have run trips to Kodiak, again with Dave Duncan and sons. These are great people and do their utmost to give their guests a fulfilling experience.

Kodiak is not for the fainthearted. In October the conditions can be harsh with very low temperatures and often with snow and ice but that's when the steelhead are in.

It's a small river which is an easy 8 weight rod and is fished by trickling flies hard on the bottom with split shot on the leader.
Expect the steelhead to be mostly 24 to 30 inches with specimens to 38 inches and if you get better then 50% to hand you do well. Mixed in will be large numbers of silver salmon (coho) averaging 12lbs with some to 20lbs and a few char.

On Kodiak you will need to be in shape as a lot of walking is involved.
You will certainly see the famed Kodiak bears, the scenery is amazing and the night skies truly inspiring.
I have twice seen the Northern Lights.

32 inch steelhead

In 2005 I hooked 54 steelhead and managed to bring 30 to the release stage. 2006 I had 58 hooked for 35 releases and a lot of Silvers.

Costs of this trip in 2008 are $4900 plus flights, overnight hotels, tips etc. Best as i know there are now no spaces left.

The camp only takes six guests and there is no one else on the river.
This is true wilderness fishing and Kodiak is the trip which captures guests more than any other trip I run.
