Tierra Del Fuego, Rio Grande

This is THE location for big sea trout.

The lodge I visit is on the upper Rio Grande and is not as costly as those on the lower river and has the additional benefit of being more sheltered from the winds which this part of the world is well known for.

I go at the back end of the season when the upper reaches have their fish.

Some of the male sea runs will have coloured to look exactly like giant browns and they are truly awesome.

My initial trip was in 2004 when eight of us had five fish over 20lbs. It's not a big numbers trip (I had 12 in five days) but they do average 12lbs and you also get some native trout to about 3lbs.

The mighty condor

It's from Cameron Lodge with Rafael Gonzales who runs a really good operation and is a truly charming man. the lodge is a really comfortable place with excellent food and wine. I am more than happy with this location and the Brits have been such popular groups that I have no trouble in being allocated a week.

You can check it out on www.anglerstdf.com and click to English and also look up some photos of 2004 on www.MagallanesFlyFishing.com

In 2005 my group had three days of very low water which made the fishing tough and then a big snow melt in the hills caused a flood which made the last three days hard but everyone had fish and the best this time went 23lbs. It was 38 inches long!

In 2006 the really big fish played hard to get but the trip was great fun and we also tried a small lake on the Estancia which produced amazing Browns to 9lbs.
We also in 2006 made some trips to lakes in the hills about an hour away and had wonderful fishing for browns to 5lbs and truly never even scratched the potential.

This was a bonus for the hard days and we intend to persue this option next year. My great friend Jim Teeny had the week after me and hit the river dead right to have a great weeks fishing.

A truly large sea run brown is the dream fish for English anglers and this is the place to achieve your dream.

2008 was a tough year again on the river with water temperatures of 58*f No good for Sea trout but the lakes again turned up trumps, look at the Rainbow in our gallery.
